Lexington Inmate Population Search
Lexington is an independent city in the Shenandoah Valley region of western Virginia, running its own sheriff's office and jail with no county oversight. The Lexington inmate population is held at the city jail managed by the Lexington Sheriff's Office, entirely separate from surrounding Rockbridge County. State-sentenced residents transfer to Virginia Department of Corrections facilities in the Western Region. You can search current custody through Virginia VINE, track state inmates through the VADOC Offender Locator, and look up court records through the Lexington Circuit Court. This page shows you how to use each tool to find an inmate or request records from the city's independent system.
Lexington Quick Facts
Lexington Sheriff and City Custody
The Lexington Sheriff's Office is the legal custodian of all people held in city custody. Lexington is an independent city in Virginia, which means it operates entirely on its own with no county government attached. The city sheriff runs the jail, handles court transport, and maintains all custody records. Under Virginia Code § 53.1-31, the sheriff is the official keeper of all records on people held in city custody. The jail holds people awaiting trial, those serving misdemeanor sentences of twelve months or less, and inmates pending transfer to a VADOC state facility.
Rockbridge County, which surrounds Lexington, has its own separate sheriff and jail. Buena Vista, another small independent city nearby, also has its own separate records. If you are unsure which jurisdiction holds a person, check all three before concluding someone is not in custody in the area. Small independent cities in western Virginia can be confusing because they sit geographically inside or alongside county borders while remaining legally independent.
For questions about anyone in Lexington custody, contact the Lexington Sheriff's Office directly. The office manages visitation, mail, inmate services, and FOIA requests for city jail records.
Note: Lexington is an independent city. Rockbridge County has no custody authority here. All Lexington inmate records belong to the Lexington Sheriff's Office.
Virginia VINE for Lexington Inmate Population
Virginia VINE covers the Lexington city jail. Search at vavine.org or the national portal at vinelink.com. Select Virginia as the state, then pick the Lexington facility. VINE shows current custody status and lets you register for free alerts by phone, email, text, or TTY. The toll-free notification line is 1-800-467-4943. It runs around the clock every day.
VINE sends alerts for release, transfer, escape, recapture, and death. It does not explain why a change happened or show where a person went after a transfer. For location after a state transfer, use the VADOC Offender Locator. VINE is anonymous. You do not need an account or an explanation to run a search or register for alerts. Anyone can use the system.
Once a Lexington inmate receives a state sentence and moves to VADOC, VINE no longer tracks them. For federal cases, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator. Federal inmates are not in the city or VADOC system.
Lexington Court Records and Inmate Cases
Court records show the charges and sentence behind anyone in the Lexington inmate population. The Lexington Circuit Court Clerk holds the official case file for every criminal case in the city. That file contains charges, plea, verdict, sentencing order, and supervision conditions. The free online lookup tool is the Virginia Judiciary Online Case Information System. When searching, select "City of Lexington" as the jurisdiction rather than Rockbridge County to get the right results.
Jail records and court records are separate. The sheriff tracks current custody. The Clerk tracks the judge's order. You may need both to get the full picture. If someone appears sentenced in the court system but not in the city jail, they likely transferred to VADOC or were released. The systems update independently.
For personal criminal history, the Virginia State Police runs the Central Criminal Records Exchange under § 19.2-389. Use the Virginia State Police records page to request your own record. Mail requests go to Department of State Police, P.O. Box 85076, Richmond, VA 23261-5076.
Requesting Lexington Inmate Records
Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, § 2.2-3700 et seq., gives Virginia residents the right to request public records. Jail logs, booking sheets, mug shots, charges, and basic custody status are all public. Submit a written FOIA request to the Lexington Sheriff's Office. Include the person's name, approximate arrest date, and the records you need. Keep it direct and brief.
Agencies must respond within five business days, with up to seven more days for complex requests. Exempt records include active investigation files, personnel records, and attorney-client material. Inmates cannot use FOIA to get their own records under § 2.2-3703(C). If your request is delayed or denied, the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council can assist at foiacouncil@dls.virginia.gov or call (804) 698-1810, toll-free 1-866-448-4100.
The FOIA code chapter is the legal foundation for all public records access requests in Virginia.
This chapter spells out your right to ask for Lexington jail records and sets the timeline for the city to respond.
Note: For FOIA on Lexington residents transferred to VADOC state prison, contact VADOC Central Records at 6900 Atmore Drive, Richmond, VA 23225, phone (804) 674-3000.
State Prison Transfers from Lexington
When a Lexington resident receives a state sentence over twelve months, VADOC takes custody. Lexington falls under the VADOC Western Region. State inmates from the city typically transfer to Western Region facilities, though actual placement depends on security classification. Use the VADOC Offender Locator to find a transferred inmate. You need the full last name and at least the first initial. Results show inmate ID, current facility, age, race, sex, and projected release date.
Western Region VADOC facilities include Augusta Correctional Center, Bland Correctional Center, Green Rock Correctional Center, Keen Mountain Correctional Center, Marion Correctional Treatment Center, Red Onion State Prison, and Wallens Ridge State Prison. Placement depends on classification. People finishing state sentences and coming out on supervision will report to the nearest VADOC Probation and Parole district office. The VADOC facilities directory has addresses and phone numbers for every Western Region office.
Victim Services for Lexington Inmate Cases

Once a person moves to VADOC, register with VADOC's NAAVI victim notification system.
