Lancaster County Inmate Population Search
The Lancaster County inmate population is held at the county jail operated by the Sheriff's Office on Virginia's Northern Neck peninsula. Lancaster is a small rural county bordered by the Rappahannock River, and the Sheriff's Office maintains custody records for everyone arrested there. You can look up people in the Lancaster County inmate population using Virginia VINE, by calling the Sheriff directly, or through the VADOC offender locator for state-sentenced inmates. This page walks through all three methods and explains how to request records under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.
Lancaster County Quick Facts
Lancaster County Jail and Sheriff's Office
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail and keeps custody records for everyone booked there. Virginia law puts the sheriff in charge of these records. Under Virginia Code § 53.1-31, the sheriff is the legal custodian of all records on people held in the county facility. Booking sheets, charge information, bond details, and release records all stay with this office. If someone was arrested in Lancaster County recently, the Sheriff's Office can tell you their current status.
Lancaster County Jail holds pre-trial detainees and people serving sentences of twelve months or less. Sentences over twelve months transfer to a VADOC state prison. That transfer generally happens within sixty days of sentencing. The Northern Neck is a remote area, so the county facility handles most local detainees directly. After a transfer, the VADOC offender locator is the right tool for finding current location and release date.
You can contact the Lancaster County Sheriff through the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office page or through the county's main government website. Both list current contact information. If you are not sure which office holds the records you need, start with the Sheriff for anything custody-related and the Clerk of Court for case documents.
Note: The Lancaster County Jail holds people serving up to 12 months. Longer sentences shift to VADOC within about 60 days of final sentencing.
Searching Lancaster Inmate Population Through VINE
Virginia VINE is a free, 24-hour service that lets you check on anyone in the Lancaster County jail online. The Lancaster County Jail participates in VINE. Go to vavine.org, select Virginia, and pick Lancaster County Jail from the facility list. The search returns current custody status. You see if the person is still held, has been released, has been transferred, or has escaped. No account is needed to search.
If you want automatic updates, register for VINE alerts. You enter a name or inmate ID and choose how to be notified: phone, email, text message, or TTY. When custody status changes, VINE reaches out right away. You do not have to provide your own name. Registrations are private. The phone option is available at 1-800-467-4943. For the national portal that includes all Virginia jails, visit vinelink.com.
VINE only covers local and regional jails. State prison placements do not appear there. If the Lancaster County VINE search comes up empty and you believe the person has been sentenced, check the VADOC Offender Locator. That search returns the inmate ID, current facility, and projected release date for anyone in state custody.

Because Lancaster County is a small jurisdiction with limited jail capacity, some inmates may be housed at a regional facility rather than the local jail. Check both the county VINE search and the VADOC system if you are not finding results in one place.

Requesting Lancaster County Inmate Population Records
Most basic inmate information in Lancaster County is public under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Under Virginia Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., Virginia residents can request jail logs, booking sheets, charge records, and custody status without giving a reason. The sheriff's office must respond within five business days. They can take up to seven more days for complex requests.
Some material is exempt. Active investigation files, personnel records, and attorney-client communications cannot be released. Inmates themselves are barred from using FOIA to get records under § 2.2-3703(C). To submit a request, send a written letter to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office or the County Administrator. State the records you want and the time period. If your request is denied without a valid reason or ignored past the deadline, contact the Virginia FOIA Advisory Council at (804) 698-1810, toll-free 1-866-448-4100, or foiacouncil@dls.virginia.gov.
